The UCS has an important presence in the College. We recognise in Clare that the challenge of change in higher education makes it particularly important for teaching staff and students to work together to shape the best possible working environment for our students. UCS representatives have full voting rights on the College’s Governing Body and on other College Committees. Undergraduates are automatically members of the UCS, although they may elect to discontinue their membership.

The UCS is also responsible for the day-to-day running of many other aspects of student life. Every year, UCS members elect student officers to cover, amongst other issues, Welfare, Equal Opportunities, Academic Affairs, Ents, Women at Clare, Food, Accommodation, Bar and JCR. Elections are usually lively and fun, with the post of UCS President always strongly contested. The officers so elected are known collectively as the ‘UCS Exec’, and work with Fellows and Staff on the key College committees to improve the students’ working conditions and to resolve difficulties. They also conduct campaigns related to particular health and education issues.

There are also twice-termly Open Meetings at which all UCS members are free to raise issues and, if there is sufficient support, to give directions to the UCS Exec.
