Second-oldest of the Cambridge colleges, with a foundation date of 1326, Clare is located just a short walk from the centre of Cambridge. College life centres on the elegant seventeenth-century Old Court. Some final-year students live here, close to the Hall, the main student common room (JCR), the bar, the Buttery, and the Chapel. The twentieth-century Memorial buildings - just over the river and close to the new College Library, with its own common room, music and computer rooms - house all the first-year students. Most second-year students are together in College hostels on a nearby site, known as the Colony, where there is a chance for friends to combine together in shared flats and houses.

Clare is able to offer accommodation to all of its students for three years. Generally, the standard of accommodation is high, and there is considerable variety in the style available: en suite sets, converted attics, seventeenth century rooms overlooking the river, and modern purpose-built blocks are all available, and most students find something they feel at home in. Rents vary according to type of accommodation. First-year rents for academic year 2008/09 will be in the range £700-985 per term (with most being £800-950). It will be possible for students to choose cheaper rooms for their second and third years, when they choose via a ballot.  Your annual expenditure on utilities is likely to be in the region of £350 per annum, although, the cost of energy consumption is subject to market forces.

The College may occasionally ask students to relocate temporarily in order to facilitate refurbishment programmes, and for major refurbishment projects may ask students to share "sets" in pairs. This would involve two friends sharing a set for perhaps one term, a set being a sitting room, and a bedroom. The set would be re-arranged into two bed-sitting rooms, - still very good accommodation and known as "cosy doubles"! We would not ask first-year students to share; this would only be offered to second - or third-year students who would ballot to share with a friend.

The Memorial Court link above will take you to some examples of first-year rooms.

The Old Court link above will give you some pictures of Old Court rooms but most are to follow soon.
