Getting Connected to the College Network

The College provides all undergraduate, and most graduate rooms with a wired network connection.  We also supply Lapwing Wireless Hotspots in many communal areas within College.

Those staying in rooms with a College provided network connection will automatically be charged for the service.  If you do not wish to use this service you need to Opt-out at the start of each academic year.  For more information about charges: click here

There are 5 steps to getting connected:

1. Read the College Network Rules

2. Secure your PC: Run the latest Windows Security Disk - Available from the Porters' Lodge

3. Change your Network settings to obtain an IP address via DHCP

4. Inform the IT Department that you have completed steps 1 to 3

5. Plug in, open your web browser and register

Connection Troubleshooting

Network Cables

1. Read the College Network Rules

Use of the College network is subject to the College network rules and University regulations.  Our aim is to provide a useful network facility while preventing misuse.  By connecting to the College network you agree to be bound by these rules, please read them carefully.  If you have any questions, please contact us.

2. Secure your PC: Run the latest Windows Security Disk from the Porters' Lodge

[At this time, Mac and Linux Systems don't present a significant virus or spyware risk to the network , so those users can skip to step 3]

Windows Users:  Before you connect to the College's network we'd like to be sure that your machine isn't riddled with viruses, overrun with spyware and has all Windows patches applied.  The University issues free security software specifically for Windows users.

The disk, which can be obtained from the Porter's Lodge has the latest version of McAfee Enterprise, Anti-Virus, SpyBot Anti-Spyware software, as well as the latest Windows patches.  We insist that all of the above is installed on your machine, with full Virus & Spyware scans performed before you connect to our network.

It sounds complicated, but there are instructions:  Simply insert the disk into your computer, a menu should auto-run and appear on the screen.  If the menu does not appear, browse the Disk and run menu.exe.  Click the 'Read Me First' button and read the instructions before starting.  If you have any difficulties, let us know, we're pleased to help..

3. Change your Network settings to obtain an IP address via DHCP

You may still be configured for your home network.  The guides below will help you reconfigure your network settings to work at Clare.
