Bursaries
In 2003 the Reverend
‘Bill' Skelton left £83,000 to Clare in his will to
provide bursaries to undergraduates in financial need, with
a preference for students from south London .
Daphne Brazier-Creagh
left a legacy of £25,000 in 2000 to provide bursaries
to students in financial need, without restriction to a particular
subject. Today, the College awards two Brazier-Creagh Bursaries
each year to undergraduates.
College buildings
Paul Mellon (1929)
left a legacy of £4.4m in 1999 to fund capital improvements
and major repairs to Old Court , the Chapel, the Bridge and
Gardens. In recent years, the income from the Paul Mellon
Clare Trust has been used to repair Clare Bridge (the oldest
spanning the River Cam), provide the College with much-needed
new kitchen facilities, and build a glasshouse to help maintain
the exemplary standard of the Fellows' Garden.
Medical research
Harrison Watson left
a legacy in 1953 of $50,000 to provide a studentship for research
into the causes and care of tuberculosis and/or diseases of
an allied character. Holders of the Harrison Watson Studentship
at Clare have included Professor Mark Walport, current Director
of the Wellcome Trust.
History
Sir Geoffrey Elton
(1949) left a gift to Clare in 1995, which has been augmented
by donations from some of his former students, to support
research in History. The G. R. Elton Fund is used primarily
to support a Postgraduate Research Scholarship in modern European
history.
Biochemistry
Professor A. C. Chibnall
left a legacy of £60,000 in 1988 to provide an annual
prize for Part III Biochemistry, and to support research students
in Biochemistry.
Modern Languages
Edward Mallinson left
a gift in 1930 to support Modern Languages at Clare. Today,
the Mallinson Fund provides an annual prize for academic distinction
in Modern Languages; travel grants to enable Modern Languages
students to travel abroad for educational purposes (recent
examples include a translation course in Paris, a summer school
in Madrid, participation in a conference in Italian studies,
and attending an Arabic course in Yemen); hardship funds for
graduate students in financial difficulties; and a Mallinson
Studentship for a PhD student in Modern Languages.
Books
The Reverend F. I.
Wane left a legacy in 1972 to assist in the conservation of
books in the Fellows' Library. Today income from the Wane
Fund is used to support a rolling programme of conservation
of the Library's most precious manuscripts and books.
