Preserving a Unique HeritageClare Colllege Old Court

‘The most beautiful building in England'

Paul Mellon (Clare 1929–31)

Clare's Old Court is listed Grade 1 and is of national historic importance. It is also the most intensively used part of the College, providing living accommodation and common rooms; offices for the Bursary and Tutorial departments; the main dining hall and kitchens; the Chapel; and the Master's Lodge.

As custodian of a unique architectural heritage, Clare has a responsibility to maintain Old Court for future generations. A generous benefaction from the late Paul Mellon established an endowment to help preserve Old Court in perpetuity. However, the buildings must first be extensively refurbished, to prevent further deterioration and bring the living accommodation up to acceptable standards. Once this major work has been carried out, the Paul Mellon Clare Trust will help to meet future special expenditure needs.

Naming Opportunities

Clare is happy to discuss with a donor the most appropriate form of recognition for a major benefaction in support of the refurbishment of Old Court. This might include, for example, naming a staircase or suite of rooms. For further information, please contact the Development Director .
