How many students does Clare take in each subject?

The College expects to fill about 135 places annually. There are no quotas for men or women, pre-or post-A2 level applicants, state or private schools/colleges, or for the individual subjects. However, the College does try to maintain a broadly equal balance between Arts and Sciences, and is subject to the overall University quota for students in Medical and Veterinary Sciences.

Thus we do not have fixed quotas for individual subjects, but aim rather to take the best candidates in Arts and in Sciences who apply to us each year. Numbers in each subject therefore fluctuate from year to year, depending on the numbers and quality of candidates applying for each subject in any one year.

Averaged over a number of years, the broad subject distribution pattern is as follows:

Arts: Anglo Saxon 4, Archaeology & Anthropology 3, Architecture 8, Classics 12, Economics 16, English 28, Geography 5, History 29, History of Art 3, Law 20, Land Economy 4, Modern Languages 38, Music 18, Oriental Studies 8, Philosophy 7, Social & Political Sciences 11, Theology 14.

Sciences: Computer Science 7, Engineering 31, Mathematics 26, Medical Science 34, Natural Sciences (Physical and Biological) 107, Veterinary Science 16.

This gives Clare College an estimated total undergraduate population of about 487, placing it in the middle of the range of colleges for size. Clare College also has 2 students taking Part III Mathematics, 23 Clinical Medics and 0 Clinical Vets.

What is the makeup of the undergraduate population at Clare?

The school/college background of Clare students is also very diverse, reflecting our efforts to attract good students from a wide range of different types of school or college, both in this country and abroad. Of the total undergraduate body, 46 are from Europe or overseas. An estimated 56% are women.

What are my chances of gaining an offer at Clare?

Overall, Clare has approximately 5 applicants per place. However, the high quality of Clare applicants means that many of them find places at other Colleges from the Pool.  Of applicants in 2007, 151 were given offers by Clare, and a further 75 applicants were made offers at other Cambridge Colleges.
