Third -year Physical Natural Sciences Student
Coming from Oxford always
provokes the question “why didn't you apply there?".
For me, the answer has got to be the course. While I have always
wanted to specialise in Physics, my first two years have been a
great opportunity to study a number of other sciences, including
Chemistry, Geology in the first year and the History and Philosophy
of Science in my second year, which have given me an extremely broad
and solid foundation to base the rest of my studies on.
Of course, it’s not all about work! Since coming to Clare
I’ve been presented with far too many opportunities to take
advantage of all of them, but I’ve had a pretty good go: our
college sports teams have been really inclusive and despite no previous
knowledge of either hockey or lacrosse I’ve played for the
College teams in both, as well as being involved in the Whiston
Society, the college society for Natural Scientists I’ve also
been involved with the college’s social schedule in my role
as a sound engineer where I’ve been responsible for the technical
side of the hugely varied and exciting live nights that are put
on in the JCR – something I never thought I’d find myself
doing!
None of this would be half as much fun as it is if it weren’t
for the people involved – everyone I’ve met at Cambridge
and especially at Clare have been extremely friendly. There genuinely
isn’t a stereotypical student, everyone is so different and
I think that’s one of Clare’s strengths: it’s
such a friendly place and everyone is welcome.
