Third -year Physical Natural Sciences Student
Coming from a State School
and applying to Cambridge University , there was always the worry
that Cambridge life with all its history and tradition might not
be for me. The moment I stepped into Clare College on an Open Day
I knew I had nothing to worry about. Clare has a reputation for
being the ‘friendly' College, and with good reason. Everyone I have
met here over the course of two years study have been so genuinely
lovely that after a few short weeks in Cambridge it felt like I
knew everybody! There is no stereotypical ‘Clare' person; the range
of personalities and interests makes every day interesting and different.
The Natural Sciences tripos
is most definitely challenging. In the first year, all students
study four courses, but the broad knowledge base and depth of understanding
gained really makes up for the amount of work you are expected to
do. The course was perfect for me, because although I came to Cambridge
as a hard and fast Chemist, I didn't want to tie myself down to
one discipline. During my studies in the first year I was able to
explore my interests and, while still a chemist at heart, have definitely
developed more biological leanings. The Part IB subjects I chose
were Chemistry and Biochemistry, leading on to a four year Masters
course in either.
I would advise any Natural
Scientists coming to Cambridge to explore the new subjects offered
because it is a perfect opportunity to develop an appreciation for
the art of Science as a whole, and this is something I don't think
you can fully understand anywhere else.
It is definitely not true
that Cambridge is totally work-orientated. Everyone is encouraged
to take up new activities, and while it is important to balance
socialising and study, there is plenty for everyone. The Union of
Clare Students funds a number of arts and sports societies that
all members of college are free to join. So far I have tried Badminton,
where I was ladies vice captain for a couple of terms, been a member
of Clare College Music Society, and am now an active member of the
Boat Club, which is definitely my favourite activity to date.
Last year I was also Secretary
of the Union of Clare Students itself, and that was one of the most
exciting things I've done during my time at Clare. It really allows
you to get involved in the hub of college life and find out what
goes on behind the scenes. The exec that I worked with was so much
fun, they were a real representation of the college community and
even now that we have handed over to new people, I think we'll all
remain close friends.
The moment you step into Clare I hope
you feel included and welcome. I know that I did and am looking
forward to completing the final two years of my studies here. Clare
College is the most amazing place to live, work and play and now
I can't imagine being anywhere else.
