Candidates from the United States

Some candidates from the United States come to Clare to take their first degree; others have taken a first degree already, and come to us as Affiliated Students.

For those coming to take a first degree, we would usually expect an excellent SATS record. We do not have target scores as such, but past experience is that applicants are in the 700s. We make offers instead on the basis of Advanced Placements. We would usually ask for 4 or 5 APs, with those closest to the proposed field of study at level 5. A typical offer would be 5 APs, with scores of four 5s and a 4.

For candidates who already have a first degree, and are applying as Affiliated Students, we would look at the Grade Point Average. We would hope to see at least 3.7, with A grades.

We would like to emphasise that the competition for undergraduate places for candidates from overseas is exceptionally severe. This is because the Government obliges us to take a certain minimum number of home (including European Union) students. In most years, we have only about seven places to offer to overseas candidates, in all subjects taken together.
