Post-A-level Applications

Although most of our applicants have still to sit their final school examinations, we welcome applications from those who have already taken their A-levels or other final school examinations. We try to judge these applicants on the same basis as those who have still to complete their school careers, whilst making allowance for the extra year’s experience and maturity such applicants should have. We would normally interview all such applicants, and make unconditional offers to those selected.

We expect applicants in this category to have achieved 3 grade As at A2 level (or equivalent).   Exceptions may be made in the case of candidates whose school careers have suffered as a result of substantial personal or medical difficulties (Cambridge Special Access).

Some candidates who have applied unsuccessfully to Clare before their final school examinations write to us for advice about reapplying, in general, we treat such applications in exactly the same way as any other post-A2 level candidate, and we would expect them to have grades at least as good as the conditional offers that we make to pre-A2 level candidates. We would also look for an additional year’s intellectual maturity and a particularly strong performance at interview.   However, such candidates should carefully consider the advantages of applying to a different College.
