Graduate Admissions: Fees and Expenses
(a) Major Fees
Applicants should consult the Graduate
Studies Prospectus for details. Every graduate student pays fees
both to the University and to the College. If you have a full scholarship
or grant, these fees will usually be charged directly to your scholarship
authority or grant-giving body. If you are self-financing or in
a special category (including many overseas students), you must
pay them yourself, in advance, at the beginning of each academic
year. Each graduate student should arrange for the payment of fees
before coming into residence and should inform the College Bursary
of arrangements. You should not expect remission of fees from the
University or College and should provide sufficient money for all
the time you expect to be here, allowing for inflation. Graduates
arriving from overseas (outside the European Union) may be asked
to provide proof of funding by immigration officers on arrival in
the United Kingdom.
(b) Maintenance
Once again, each applicant should consult the Graduate Studies
Prospectus. The major items of maintenance are rent, heating,
food, travel, the purchase of books, clothing, and domestic
items.
If you are a single graduate
living in College (specifically Memorial (W staircase) and Old Court)
, the rent and heating of your room, the cost of meals taken in
College and the cost of other items (MCR subscription, formal halls
etc.) are billed at the end of each term (December; March; June;
and at the end of the Long Vacation in September). The rent quoted
for your College room is for the period of Term. If you wish, you
may opt for a 9-month lease. This permits you to reside in
your room for each of the three Terms at no extra charge.
If you opt for the standard lease, you will be charged £16.75
a night for each night you stop outside of Term.
If you are a married graduate or single graduate living
outside the College but in College-owned lodgings (including shared houses and the St Regis complex), rent is paid
monthly in advance to the College. A deposit of £350 for single or £550 for partnered accommodation is also required in advance when the tenancy agreement is
signed. You will also receive College bills in December, March,
June and September for meals and other items purchased through
the College and you are expected to make prompt payment.
(c) Minor Fees
The MCR Committee fixes a small fee (£7 per term), charged in one instalment at the start of Lent Term, to provide
social facilities in the MCR. This is charged on the termly
College bill.
Self-financed graduate students may be required to pay a fee
to their Department to cover the exceptional cost of any special
items needed for their research. The Department should clearly
indicate when it accepts an application if it intends to make
such a charge and it will be shown as a special provision on the
acceptance form sent to the candidate by the Board of Graduate
Studies. Such charges are uncommon and usually relate only to
some biological sciences.
Depending on whether or not you take regular
meals in College, you may decide to pay a Kitchen Fixed Charge (about
£107 a term) which then entitles you to lower cost meals. This option
is predominantly exercised by those graduates who live in College
itself, although it is by no means compulsory.
