Clare Partnership for Schools

Back to Admissions

Programme for Academic Year 2007-2008

Clare Partnership for Schools is an initiative from Clare College, Cambridge, supported by KPMG, Clifford Chance and Morgan Stanley, to encourage students at maintained schools in the London Boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Newham and Hackney to aim for the best for themselves in higher education.

Aims

The Partnership has four aims:

  • to help widen students’ horizons in planning for higher education, and in particular to encourage students to begin thinking about higher education opportunities from an early stage in their secondary school careers.
  • to arrange for additional out of school teaching for bright students, to enable them to explore their interests in greater depth and gain confidence in their potential.
  • to bring groups of gifted and talented students to Clare, to enable them to experience something of university level teaching in Cambridge at first hand.
  • to use the experience gained from this partnership within Clare to strengthen our campaign to attract talented young people to Cambridge from all social backgrounds.

Strategy

The Partnership places strong emphasis on direct contact between students, teachers and the College. It is aimed at students over the four years from Year 10, the year before GCSE examinations are taken, to Year 13, in which ‘A’ levels are taken. We offer a menu of possible activities and visits as laid out in the programme for the current academic year, and aim to explore with individual schools and teachers which type of activity might suit them best. We aim here for flexibility, so that teachers and students are able to ask for the support and provision most appropriate to their needs.

Bursaries

Clare also offers a small number of bursaries to students from the three Boroughs who come to study at the college. These bursaries are aimed particularly at students who are eligible for partial or full remission of their fees, as assessed by the Local Education Authority. For further information please contact Rachael Morris on schools@clare.cam.ac.uk.

We are very grateful to Linklaters, KPMG, Allen & Overy, and Clifford Chance for making these bursaries available.

For other bursary funds available to students in Cambridge please see the Newton Trust Bursaries http://www.newtontrust.cam.ac.uk/
