Programme for Academic Year 2008-2009

FIRST TERM

Interview preparation day

Students who have applied to Oxford or Cambridge will attend an interview workshop to help them prepare for the December interviews.  The workshop will include an exploration of the purpose of the interview from the point of view of the university and of the student; advice on what to emphasise and what to avoid during an interview; and an opportunity to see a mock interview in action.

The day will also provide an opportunity to obtain subject-specific advice from Directors of Studies on what to expect during the interview.

Mentoring Scheme

This is a new project this year, bringing the employees of our sponsors and 25 specially selected Tower Hamlets students together. These students will receive extra help and guidance throughout year 12 via employee led workshops and presentations held at the london offices of a sponsoring firm.There will be three sessions, each looking at a different aspect of job skills and University applications.

To nominate one of your students to take part in the scheme, contact Rachael Morris for more details.

The first session will take place in Clifford Chance's Offices in Canrary Wharf. This session will cover the written skills required for CVs, personal statements and application forms.

SECOND TERM

Target Teachers Conference

Organised by a consortium of Colleges including Clare, these days have been developed for members of staff who support Sixth Form students applying for places in Higher Education, and particularly at Cambridge University.Formal conference proceedings will run from 9am until 4pm to provide Sixth Form staff with guidance on:

  • Our admissions process and what we are looking for in potential Cambridge candidates
  • Reference writing
  • How to advise applicants on the interview process

There will be opportunities to look around some of the University facilities, and to meet Admissions staff from a number of Colleges. The January and April programmes will be similar, to enable you to choose the most convenient date.

All delegates are warmly invited to dinner on the evening of the 8th. This will be hosted in one of the College Halls and members of Cambridge College Admissions staff will be present. College accommodation will be available to all delegates on the night before the Conference and, along with all meals and refreshments, will be provided entirely free of charge. However, teachers must make their own way to and from the conference.

Mentoring Scheme (session 2)

The second session of the mentoring scheme will take place in the offices of KPMG and will focus on practical interview skills for jobs and university.

Date: February 6th

Shadowing Opportunity for Year 12 students .

The Cambridge University Students' Union (CUSU) offers to Year 12 students from all parts of the UK the chance to 'shadow' a first year student in Cambridge . Visitors will be paired with a local student according to their subject interests. Visitors will be invited to arrive on Thursday evening. They will spend the Friday attending lectures and tutorials with their 'shadow' student, and then return home on the Saturday morning. Clare will be participating in this scheme, although Tower Hamlets students applying to participate in the scheme will not necessarily be allocated to Clare.

Information about the Shadowing Scheme will be sent out to all state schools at the end of September. Places will be allocated by early January, and preference given to applicants from schools with limited success with Cambridge applications, or to applicants with no family history of university education.

Science Festival- Schools Masterclasses

Run to complement National Science Week, the Cambridge Science Festival are repeating last year's highly successful Schools Masterclasses. These are day long workshops for year 9-11 students, with various sessions such as "walking with robots" and "how to hunt a submarine". The day will run from 9.30am til 3.15pm and places can be requested from Hannah Weibye, the Science Festival Schools Liaison Officer with this booking form .

Maths Workshop: Preparation for STEP

This study day is offered to students who will be sitting the STEP entrance paper for Cambridge Mathematics. Following the study day, students will be offered email contacts with current Maths students at Clare, to help them with their ongoing preparation.

THIRD TERM

Cambridge University and Clare College Open Days

The University departments and Colleges are open on these days. Year 12 students are particularly welcome. Overnight accommodation at Clare will be available to Tower Hamlets students on two nights in July (TBC) coinciding with our Open Days. These two days provide students considering applying to Cambridge with an opportunity to explore the the city, the university's faculties and departments, and some of the various Colleges in addition to Clare.

Mentor Scheme Visit- Clare leg

The mentor students have the opportunity to visit Cambridge for the day with a timetable of workshops about their University course options and how to apply.

ALL YEAR ROUND

Year 10 visits

Year 10 visitors spend the day with a group of Cambridge students. There is a tour of the Colleges and the town in Cambridge, a discussion of life at university and a quiz.  The programme can be tailored to suit the needs of individual school parties.

Gifted and Talented Study Day

This study day will run from 10 am to 3 pm approximately. It will offer two sessions, one in the humanities and one in the sciences, for students from the Gifted and Talented strand. The two sessions will be run by teaching staff in the College. The emphasis will be on small group work and active student participation in exploring new areas of learning.

Individual School Visits in Tower Hamlets

Admissions staff from Clare are happy throughout the year, to visit individual schools to raise awareness of the requirements for study at Cambridge, and to assist staff in preparing applicants for interview.  Teaching staff are also happy to visit schools to offer one-off study sessions in relation to particular aspects of the school curriculum.

BURSARIES FOR STUDENTS AT CLARE COLLEGE

Clare also offers a small number of bursaries to students from the three Boroughs who come to study at the college. These bursaries are aimed particularly at students who may be eligible for partial or full remission of their fees, as assessed by the Local Education Authority.
