The Forbes Mellon Library is in Memorial Court, immediately opposite Cambridge
University Library. It was completed in 1986 when it replaced a smaller
library in Old Court and is named after two of its main benefactors, Mansfield
Forbes and Paul Mellon. The Forbes Mellon provides a quiet and harmonious
working environment for students within a building of considerable architectural
interest.
The library forms part of a complex which also houses a student common-room,
a recital room and three music practice-rooms. The comprehensive computer
facilities within the library include networked PCs, iMacs and printers
while students reading Law have their own Reading Room in Ashby Court,
with additional terminals and a printer. All the systems in use in the
main library and in the
Lipstein Law Reading Room
- catalogues, circulation, management -
are fully automated.
The Forbes Mellon is open to all students and staff currently in residence
at Clare and its modern and up-to-date stock covers all the recommended
reading for undergraduate courses offered by the college, together with
a considerable number of postgraduate texts and other material (CDs, CD-Roms,
cassettes, European newspapers etc.). Every effort is made to fulfil requests
for purchase and considerable attention is given to student suggestions.
The library has a large reference section and files of information on all
matters affecting students are regularly updated. A wide range of equipment
is available for student use, including a photocopier, headphones (to enable
students to access interactive teaching materials) and skeletons for hire
to medical students.
The library staff works closely with the Union of Clare Students Library
representative and the college Library Committee includes representatives
from both the MCR and the JCR.

The Fellows' Library
The College, the second oldest in Cambridge, possesses a library of approximately
6000 volumes including some manuscripts and incunabula. Its early printed
holdings are noted in H.M.Adams Catalogue of books and the Short-title
catalogue. In 1971 the College received a bequest of bird books from the Reverend F.I.Wane.
These have been deposited as a named collection in the Cambridge University
Library.
