Services and Utilities in Graduate Housing
Telephones
Ntl phone lines are provided in all student rooms except
at 38A to 52A Newnham Road where there are communal lines only.
By having an Ntl CU2 line
you will not have to pay for any calls made within the University.
The cost of connecting
a line and all call charges are the responsibility of the individual.
Computer Connections
Individual connections to the University network and the internet are provided
at St Regis flats 1-32, St Regis House, 108 Chesterton Road and 34-37
Newnham Road. For connection you should contact the IT Department
at ITSupport@clare.cam.ac.uk, phone (7)61608, or via UMS. At all other
properties the University network can be accessed by using the phone
line in conjunction with a modem. Information on other IT provision
can be found here.
Electricity
Residents at St Regis House and 108 Chesterton Road are billed monthly, the bill
being split equally between all residents. In shared houses or flats,
the Head Tenant is responsible for paying the bill to the relevant
company supplying the electricity. Couples or those living in single
flats are responsible for paying their own electricity bills. Electricity
meters are found on each floor and in each flat at St Regis House,
in the cupboard near the rear door to Flats 1-16, in the cupboard
near the middle stairs Flats 17-32 and in cupboards under the stairs
in most other properties or in the kitchen. .
Gas
All properties with the exception of St Regis Flats 1-32 have gas-fired central
heating with radiators. Residents at St Regis House and 108 Chesterton
Road are billed monthly, the bill being split equally between all
residents. Couples or those living in single flats, are responsible
for paying their own gas bills. Gas meters are nearly all situated
in boxes on the outside of premises. At St Regis Flats 1-32 they can
be found in the louvered cupboards adjacent to the properties. All
gas appliances are gas safety checked once a year and all boilers
are serviced annually.
Storage Heaters
Flats 1-32 St Regis are heated by storage heaters and run on off-peak electricity.
Waste and Refuse Disposal
All the properties have wheelie-bins which are collected by the City Council
on different days of the week. At the St Regis site there are large
industrial bins behind the wooden fence which are emptied twice a
week. Recycling facilities are also included at the St Regis
waste compound. At all other properties, the residents are responsible
for putting the bins out and taking them in. Please make sure bins
are not left on the pavement for partially sighted people or those
with disabilities to fall over.
Cleaning
College cleaners clean the communal areas at St Regis House, Floors 1-3, 67, 69,
108, 120, 190 Chesterton Road, 69 Alpha Road and the flats at Queen
Edith’s housing medical students. Students are responsible for cleaning
their own rooms which must be kept to the standard expected in graduate
housing. In addition, the stairs and stairwells are cleaned at St
Regis Flats 1-16 and the balconies and stairs at Flats 17-32 St Regis.
In kitchens, tenants are responsible for washing up cooking utensils
as well as crockery and cutlery; utensils include grill pan and ovens
