Other Aspects of Graduate Housing

Bicycles

At St Regis House and Flats 1-32 there are three lockable garages for the storage of bicycles together with cycle racks and hoops. At other properties there are either cycle racks or lockable sheds. All bicycles should be kept locked and out of sight and not under any circumstances taken into any building, or left on the balconies at St Regis, or in front gardens where they are a nuisance to neighbours.

Cars

Car parking is available at the St Regis site and limited on road parking is available at 190 Chesterton Road, 43 Eltisley Avenue and 34 Grantchester Street. At Queen Edith’s Way there are garages and a driveway but all other accommodation falls in "resident only" parking areas and the City Council do not issue permits to students. If you bring a car to Cambridge you will need to obtain a Motor Proctor Licence from the University and a Graduate Housing permit for the site where you intend to park. Parking is very limited and there is absolutely no overnight parking for guests.

Council Tax

In general students are exempt, but non-student spouses and partners are not; shared houses which are occupied exclusively by students are exempt from all charges, as are similarly occupied single self-contained bedsits. A couple, where one is not a student, will be liable for 75% of the full tax on that property. In such cases it may be possible to claim Council Tax Benefit dependent on joint income. Council Tax Exemption letters can be obtained from the Tutorial Office and these should be sent to the City Council, Revenue Department, otherwise you could end up with a bill. The College is not liable for the payment of Council Tax.

Parties

Large parties are not allowed in graduate accommodation.

Supervisions

The Finance Committee has ruled that the use of any part of this accommodation for conducting supervisions should be regarded as exceptional and only with the Graduate Tutor’s and Steward’s permission.

Pianos

It is only possible to house a piano in graduate housing at Room 1, 69 Alpha Road.
